“To design is to envision and create spaces. How does one envision the process of space-making - when space itself is restricted? How much does available space dictate the kind of space that is created?”

Daman is home to an old distillery - the Khemani Distilleries. A luxurious office was being designed adjacent to it. The studio was brought in to provide landscape interventions for the same.
The location within which the landscape was to be undertaken presented a challenge. Situated between the distillery, and a drain, the possibilities for intervention seemed to be limited.
The intent was still to create a sense of identity and drama within the space that was available. A stainless steel installation was designed.
This installation - as it stands on the land - serves a dual purpose. It functions as a barrier between the old and the new - with the windows within the installation creating connections; emphasizing that which needs to be.
Everyday, as the workers of the factory walk by, the installation creates frames - focusing on them; making them an undeniable part of the fabric of the distillery.
The space also incorporates customized lights, and planters, along with a lotus pool.
It is an undeniable argument against the belief that space is required to create a sense of drama; a sense of identity in the design processes that we undertake.
