A SPACE FOR US

“How does one design spaces that are reflections of personal affections and patterns in a manner, such that, encompassed within them are broader narratives of life, culture, and then - self?”
Landscape India Project Image 1

Over its 50 years, the Studio has undertaken quite a journey. Prof. Prabhakar Bhagwat began this journey upon his return from Delhi. Emboldened by friends who demonstrated immense faith in his ability, he began the studio out of a small space near Advance Cinema in Ahmedabad.

And then, due to evolving needs, we moved studios; ultimately working out of two spaces we acquired at Panchtirth Apartments. It was a space where we were able to demonstrate who we were, what we understood the design profession to be, and how we wanted to undertake conversations as they pertained to the profession.

After over 20 years, the need arose to move once again; to create a space of aspiration, imagination, and unbridled creativity. And so, on a sunny Sunday afternoon, we reached the conclusion that that is exactly what we must do.

This space demonstrates many ideas and conversations culminating in perfect harmony; conversations of art, of spatial division, of thinking beyond the limits of immediate use.

The entrance gesture, then, is a sculpture conceptualized by Dhara Mittal and executed by her team - Nishant Mittal, Vaishal Patel, Premkumar Vaishya, Gajanan Paratkar, and Prakash Panchal - called Taking Roots. A combination of wood, copper treated with coffee, concrete, and leather - the sculpture makes tangible the idea of inception; of creating. Envisioned in two parts, in the form of a seed pod that is often used in the planting palette of the studio.

Along with this installation - the entrance gesture is also composed of bell metal plates that function as reflective surfaces for the lights within the space. Bell metal also forms entrance arches for the various working spaces within the studio - lending them a sense of distinction, while simultaneously introducing into the space an alternate materiality.

Also, in the studio space, against the Northern Lights are 10 screens that tell the tales of 10 mythical landscapes that have at their core natural elements, and spaces.  Designed by the Studio, and executed by Anek Taanka, these screens are embroidered on Madarpatt, and allow the viewers to envision a world that is utopian, and indeed aspirational. They are nuanced narratives that, when read carefully, become demonstrative of ideas beyond themselves; of ideas of survival, of morality and ethics, and the many roles that landscapes have played in shaping our ever-evolving notions of civilisation.

Within the same space, are two lamps - each measuring about 5 feet in diameter - complete with free-form embroidery that resembles bees taking flight; swarming with purpose. The lamps, while completing the space, offer a subtle juxtaposition to the narratives of the screen.

And then, moving forward, one is met with a familiar narrative - one of a river altering itself in response to ill-planned urban development, and growth. The installation - Avataran; Sabarmati - by Mrugen Rathod makes this idea absolute in the context of the Sabarmati River, while demonstrating the path the river takes as it flows through Ahmedabad.

This installation acts as a connecting element between the work spaces in the studio, and the lounge.

As one enters the lounge, one is met by prowling tigers - demonstrated in the Gond Art-Style, painted by Kaushal Prasad Tekam - over lamps; one of the lamps in the lounge measures approximately 6 feet; with three more of varying sizes. And as they gaze down, vigilant, the viewer is encouraged to examine their position in the hierarchical  world we inhabit. The lounge also functions as the library, and informal working space.

Rounding off the space are two conference rooms - one that dominantly features wood, and the other dominantly featuring marble. They have been designed to be adaptable, and encourage various forms of conversation.

And then, all through the office is art that is demonstrative of memories and moments lived, and ideas of friendships, compassion, and learning.

All in all, this is now a space where we will continue to thrive, learn, and create.
